The Village of Belmont has begun the process of applying for a Ohio Department of Natural Recourses grant to reconstruct the existing playground which is located behind the old Belmont Elementary School. At the Thursday, March 2 meeting, Belmont Village Council passed a resolution authorizing Mayor Stan Sobel to apply for a $25,000 NatureWorks grant through ODNR for the playground equipment.
The Ohio Mideastern Governments Association, which made a presentation to council several months ago, has been assisting Sobel with the grant writing process. The grant application has to be completed and submitted before May 1, 2017. Village residents and some living outside of the village will be working to complete the grant application so as to provide ADA compliant equipment at the playground. The recently formed Playground Reconstruction Committee hopes to provide a playground that encourages toddler aged children through elementary age to play.
At the March 2 meeting, Sobel said he has received donations from the community and has a pledge from a corporation to give a sizable donation to the project.
The village held a special meeting on Monday, March 13t to discuss, explain, and take any necessary actions needed to help in the preparation of the grant opportunity needed to fund the replacement of existing playground equipment currently on site with new ADA compliant equipment and of making the playground more accessible to the handicapped.
Anyone wishing to become part of the Playground grant writing team should contact, Sobel at 740-484-1989.
