With the help of Operating Engineers Local 18 Apprenticeship & Training and contractor Shelly and Sands, the installation of a French pipe drainage system moved forward last week at the Barnesville High School football stadium field.

Spearheading by the Shamrock Goaliners, the project is phase one of many planned stadium improvements. Goaliners President Dick Thomas said Local Union 18 Apprentice Program donated the equipment and operators for the project and Shelly & Sands completed a survey of the field and excavation plans. Thomas said new turf will be installed in April. Improvements to the practice field and parking lot are also planned.

The Goaliners is a non-profit organization formed for the purpose of helping Barnesville Exempted Village School District maintain, refurbish and enhance the Barnesville High School Football Stadium Complex.

The organization was started by former Barnesville High School graduates and athletes who have an interest in improving the Shamrock Stadium.

The Goaliners are focusing on improving the safety and aesthetics of the football stadium. Last summer, additional earth material was brought in to fill holes in the field. Grass over-seeding was completed, an irrigation system was installed and a lawn fertilizer company was hired to fertilize and improve the turf. In August, members cleared and burned brush behind the bleachers and around the practice field.

To raise the necessary funds, the Goaliners implemented a Legacy Wall at the high school. The wall has been erected at the entrance of the school and bricks that have already been purchased have been placed there.
