Thomas first honorary Shamrock captain
Dick Thomas, Barnesville High School Class of 1954 graduate, was chosen as the first honorary captain at the Shamrock's first home football game of the season.
Thomas, number 23, was a halfback on the Shamrock football team. He was a member of the 1954 Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference team. He received honorable mention by the Associated Press for the All Ohio football team. He was selected to play in the Ohio/West Virginia All Star Game. Thomas was the team captain in his senior year in which he was the second leading scorer in the Ohio Valley with 92 points.
After spending four years in the United States Air Force, from 1954 to 1958, Thomas walked on at Marshall University and received a full football scholarship. While at Marshall, he lettered all four years in both football and wrestling. He graduated from Marshall in 1962.
Thomas is now retired after working 39 years in the Broward County schools in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He coached both football and wrestling for most of those years.
Dick and his wife Althea now divid their time equally between Ft. Lauderdale and Barnesville.
Thomas has two children, five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
His hobbies now are playing golf and flying his Piper Comanche airplane that he restored.
Thomas said he appreciated and was humbled by the honor of being selected as the Shamrock's first honorary captain.
