Church roof work continues

The second of two large steel support beams was lowered into the roof of the Barnesville First Presbyterian Church on Friday. Barnesville company Buckeye Steel and employees from Robertson, a company that specializes in the construction of school buildings, have been working on the historic building. Rev. Andrew Woods said the work will correct the ridge line of the building that was damaged and in danger of collapse from the weight of heavy tile roof shingles that have been removed.
He said the two companies have been working well together and despite recent inclement weather, are on schedule to complete the majority of the work by Aug. 18, so that Church Street will be re-opened in time for the first day of school on Thursday, Aug. 19.
Rev. Woods said work on the inside of the church will begin this week. In the mean time, church services are being held in the basement of the church. New plastic composite roof tile will be installed in September.
