Cathryn Stanley / Editor Published:

The Barnesville Exempted Village Board of Education conducted business necessary for the start of the 2010-11 school year on Aug. 19 at its July 13 meeting.

The board approved the following staffing decisions:

* approved a 1.5 percent increase of the superintendent's and treasurer's annual salaries, effective Aug. 1;

* accepted the resignation of Nathan Kearns as High School Spanish Teacher and Co-Advisor of the Class of 2013;

* hired Joseph Jancura as vocal music teacher and vocal music director for the junior and high schools;

* hired Zachary Groves as part-time instrumental music teacher and instrumental music director;

* approved Mary Ann Stephens as volunteer assistant volleyball coach and

* accepted the resignation of Natalie Long as middle school Title I teacher.

The board approved the following policy decisions:

* adopted an amended Interscholastic Extracurricular Eligibility policy;

* the elementary volunteer handbook;

* an agreement between the district and the Southeast Ohio Rehabilitation Services, LLC for physical therapy services;

* adopted student due process rights, student suspension, emergency removal of student and student expulsion policies;

* amended a policy regarding student discipline and

* adopted amended guidelines for designation of valedictorian/salutatorian. Previously, the valedictorian was chosen by highest grade point average. However, students who were taking college-preparatory classes ( which are based on a five-point scale) in addition to their non-weighted four-point scale classes, were bringing down their cumulative GPA when taking additional, none-weighted elective courses. Under the new policy, the valedictorian will be determined by GPA, unless more than one student has straight As in all their weighted and non-weighted classes. In that case, CO-valedictorians will be named.

Football tickets and passes will be available beginning Aug. 23. All passes, reserved seating and presale tickets will be sold at the Central Office. In addition, presale tickets will be sold the week of every home game at the Pit Stop and Bob's Drive Thru in Barnesville.

The board approved the following donations to the elementary school playground project: Rumer Loudin, $25; Jack and Mary Ellen Hannahs, $500; Ricky, Jenny Luke and Vince Taylor, $500; Kelly-Kemp-Braido Funeral Homes, $50; David and Charlene Fitzpatrick, $100; K&J Machine, Inc., $200; Belmont Savings Bank, $100; Belmont Professional Associates, Inc., $100; Riesbeck Food Markets, $1,000; Doan Ford, Inc., $100 and Barnesville Area Education Foundation, $1,000.

The board approved a super blanket purchase order for $24,672 for copier equipment and services from Ricoh and a depository agreement for two, six-month certificates of deposit with WesBanco.

Superintendent Lucas reported on a building and grounds committee meeting, the big topic of which was the resurfacing of parking lots. Lucas said the committee recommended fixing the pot holes at this point and begin paving in phases next summer. He said the committee compiled a list of five priority areas, which includes repaving sections of the high school parking lot and paving the gravel parking lot at the elementary school.

Lucas said it would cost $100,000 to complete all the projects at once. In the spring the projects will be put up for bid and paved in phases as the district's budget allows.

It was also reported that Phase I of the elementary school's playground project will be completed this summer.

Superintendent Lucas distributed the Bullying and Hazing Report for the 2009-10 school year. The report showed that 21 incidents were reported -- three at the elementary, 16 at the middle school and two at the high school.

The board will have a special meeting on Thursday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. in the middle school cafetorium to decide on a proposed athlete drug testing policy, consider candidates for a high school Spanish teacher and approved changes to the student/family handbooks.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. in the middle school cafetorium.
