Drug testing policy decision on hold

Cathryn Stanley / Editor Published:

A decision to adopt an athlete drug testing policy was put on hold by the Barnesville Exempted Village Board of Education at its July 13 meeting, pending more information. A special meeting will be held on Aug. 5 to discuss the policy, select a high school Spanish teacher and conduct other necessary business.

Lucas said if approved, the policy, which will be reviewed by the district's legal council, will likely be in place for the 2010-11 school year and will affect all Ohio High School Athletic Association athletes in the district.

Lucas implementation of a drug testing policy is a proactive measure and has not stemmed from any problems in the district. He said the board first discussed implementing a drug testing policy last year when Cambridge High School did so. Since then, Martins Ferry has followed suit.

The special meeting was necessary to make decisions before the beginning of the 2010-11 school year. The board will hold its regular meeting on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. in the middle school cafetorium.
