Barnesville Village Council received five letters of interest for a council seat vacated by the resignation of Ernest Howell. At a June 28 meeting, council members were to review the letters, interview the applicants and consider Howell's recomendation that his daughter Debbie Householder fill his seat. Council has 30 days from Howell's resignation that was accepted at the June 7 meeting to fill the seat. Howell had served on the council for 28 years. The appointment is expected to be made at the July 5 council meeting.
Donations for fireworks for the July 3 celebration at Barnesville Memorial Park are needed.
"It is very important and we need donations to make it happen," said councilman Brad Hudson.
The Chamber of Commerce will be having their annual chicken BBQ and the Barnesville Park will be handling all other concessions.
Park board members are asking the local community to again support efforts to provide fireworks. Donations will be used solely to fund the purchase of fireworks. All contributions will be greatly appreciated. Checks may be made payable to the "Fireworks Fund" and mailed to Barnesville Memorial Park, P.O. Box 485, Barnesville, OH 43713.
Hudson said park employees are gearing up for the upcoming Beast of the East baseball tournaments.
Council received a list of village streets and alleys in need of paving. Village Administrator Roger Deal said Village Operations Manager Bill Morgan and street department employee Mike Gibson recently reviewed village streets and alleys.
"Winter has been rough on us and there is much paving to be done," Deal said.
Morgan said the list does not begin to cover the work needed, but is a start. Asphalt and chip sealing is proposed on Pleasant Street, VFW/Hallmark alley and Crestview. Chip sealing is recommended for an alley off of East Main Street near Neal Studio, Cedar Street, Ohio/Warren alleys and McGhee Lane. Patching is recomended for Westview, Pine Lane, Park Street, East and West Church streets, East Main Street, South Street, South Chestnut Street and Shady Lane.
Also included on that list is the repaving of the municipal parking lot located at Arch and Church streets.
Village Administrator Roger Deal estimated the project at about $9,000. The cost would be covered with parking meter funds, which currently totals about $34,000.
The street/alley/sidewalk committee was to review the list and make a decision at the next meeting.
At the requestof Morgan, council is considereing a contract with L Con Engineering of Pickerington, Ohio for a hydraulic modeling computer system for the water department.
Morgan said the computer system would be able to analyze the water system's data and generate reports regarding maintenance, repairs and future improvements. Lee Conkle, owner of L-Con, designed the village's Greenmount tank transmission line in 1998.
Morgan said Conkle has a history of working with Poggemyer Design, the engineering firm designing the village's waste water treatment plant upgrades. "He [Conkle] has a history with our system. That is a plus," Morgan said. "One of the biggest obstacles with an engineering firm is having to start over from square one."
"It would be a good planning and maintenance tool and will be good for current and future Environmental Protection Agency mandates," Morgan said. "You can do many things with hydraulic modeling. It is something our water distribution system is in need of, especially because we distribute water to three municipal customers."
Building permits for the installations of roofs were approved for: Eric Butler, 221 S. Broadway St. and Lova Warrick, 416 N. Broadway St.
Barnesville Village Council will meet in regular sesson on Monday, July 5, 7 p.m. in council chambers in the municipal building.
