Construction of Veterans Honor Board to begin in Morristown
MORRISTOWN - Ground will be broken this summer on the project to re-construct the Veterans Honor Board from the 1940s that recognized citizens of Morristown who served in World War II.
The original board was wood and stood inside the community. The new board will be constructed of more durable material and will be located in the Lynn-Hunkler Memorial Park.
The Morristown Historic Preservation Association, project sponsor, is working with Ed Tacosik of LogoTek on construction of the new board.
Phase I of the project will begin in July with site planning and construction of the board. Before work begins, MHPA is urging veterans and their families to review the list of names from the original board by logging onto its website at www.morristownohio.org .
Only veterans who had a Morristown address at their time of service in World War II will be included on the Board.
If you discover that your name or the name of a family member who lived in Morristown during the time of service is not included, contact Cheryl Harris at 740-782-1512. It will be necessary to provide copies of honorable discharge papers and another official document that reflects the veteran's Morristown address. Deadline is July 16, 2010.
Fundraising will continue to complete additional phases of the project such as brick pavers, lighting, and benches. The addition of Morristown veterans who served in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf and other conflicts is also planned in the future. The Morristown Historic Preservation Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the historic integrity of the National Register of Historic Places' village. This project is made possible through fundraising activities sponsored by MHPA and grants from the Belmont County Tourism Council.
