Victorian Family Fun Day Aug. 15 The Belmont

Victorian Family Fun Day Aug. 15 The Belmont County Victorian Museum invites visitors to join in an afternoon of Victorian family pastimes. Several churches have been invited to send a team of three young participants for a croquet invitational on the lawns of the museum. The winning team will be awarded the "Golden Croquet Ball" trophy. Event organizers hope this trophy will circulate for years to come. Participation ribbons will be given to all team members. The Croquet Invitational is open to all who wish to participate. Croquet came to the United States in the 1860's and took hold almost immediately. It was only surpassed by tennis and golf in the years before World War I. One-A-Chord a capella quartet is a vocal blend of musical talent from Barnesville. Their spontaneous humor and audience interaction makes each performance delightfully unique. The popular group began as a gospel quartet in October 2000. Over the years, the group has shown versatility by adding Oldies and doo wop, patriotic and barbershop to their repertoire. The quartet includes baritone Tony Huntsman, high tenor Terry McCort, lead singer Tyler McCort and Brad Wilson who sings bass. The group will perform at 3 p.m. Those attending may bring lawn chairs. Refreshments of hot dogs, Victorian minted lemonade, ice sassafras tea and Kirke's old-fashioned ice cream will be served at near-Victorian prices. A Victorian-style cake walk will be held at 4 p.m. This event is open to the public and will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, rain or shine. Visitors will be able to tour the Mansion Museum with its displays of Victorian family life: antique heirloom items from Grandma's Attic, needlework and china painting, nature collections and floral arrangements. Regular admission fees apply. "Our desire is to have visitors step back into time and experience a summer afternoon before America had modern conveniences," said museum assistant curator Vicki Duvall.
