The Mended Hearts meet Sept. 14

The Greater Wheeling Area Chapter 280 of The Mended Hearts, Inc. will meet Monday, Sept. 14 at the Ohio Valley Medical Center, in the Nurse's Residence Auditorium. We will meet at 6:30 p.m. for social time and light refreshments. Our meeting will start promptly at 7 p.m. You may park in the parking lot beside the auditorium, the arm should go up as you approach it.

Our September guest speaker will be Edward K. Chiu MD, PhD. Dr. Chiu will be bringing us up to date on the latest information regarding the American Heart Association and the Heart Walk. This will be a really interesting topic and a real interest to all heart disease patients and their families!

Fair Housing Seminar Sept. 12

The Belmont County Fair Housing Commission will be conducting a Fair Housing seminar, which is open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Somerset Township Building, 55940 Somerton Highway, Somerton.

There is a vast amount of information that will be available to the public relating to housing concerns. Fair Housing brochures are also available.

By definition, fair housing is a condition in which individuals of similar income levels in the same housing market have a like range of housing choices available to them regardless of their race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, familial status or military status.

Fair housing treatment applies to persons seeking to lease, rent or buy a dwelling or land within the County. Willful intent to violate the basic principles of fair housing is termed discrimination. Discrimination is a violation of Federal and State Law.

Pennyroyal Opera House show Sept. 11

The Pennyroyal Opera House in Fairview, Ohio will have a bluegrass show on Friday, Sept. 11 featuring Northwest Territory. Opening the show will be The Roadhogs.

The kitchen will open at 5 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m.

The Pennyroyal Opera House is located off I-70 at exit 198.

50/50 raffle tickets being sold

50/50 raffle tickets are being sold to benefit the James M. O'Grady Memorial Scholarship Fund. Jim taught math and was a guidance counselor at Union Local High School, and he also taught Driver's Education to countless people over the years. The scholarship is awarded to a Union Local High School senior who is attending Ohio University and majoring in education or a math related field. Last year's recipient was Sarah Minnich. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be held on Friday, Nov. 20. Oakleigh Garden Club installation dinner

Oakleigh Garden Club's installation dinner will be held at Mehlman's Cafeteria on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. The welcome will be given by Linda Ellis and the invocation before dinner by Betty Lee.

Apple Festival Queen and Princess Pageant

The 2009 Apple Festival Queen and Princess Pageant will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Moose Lodge in Wellsburg, West Virginia at 11:30 a.m. Special event this year will be the high-point overall winner.

The events are open to all area boys 0-6 years of age and girls 0-18 years of age. Winners will be presented at the Wellsburg Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Main Street United Methodist Women silent auction

The Main St. United Methodist Women will have a silent auction. Members may bring crafts, white elephant and baked goods. Devotions will be by Becky Lynn. G.C. Murphy Employee Reunion Sept. 13

The G.C. Murphy employee reunion will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13 in the basement of the Barnesville Senior Center, all former employees and their family are welcome. Weyer Chapter, Order of Eastern Star will meet on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 a.m. Friendship night will be enjoyed with each member inviting two members to the meeting. A nice surprise for officer bringing most members.

UL Community Relations Committee

The Union Local School District will hold a Community Relations Committee meeting on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Central Office in Morristown. Adult Class offered at BCC

The Belmont-Harrison Vocational School District is offering an adult class in small engine repair at the Belmont Career Center.

The basic small engine repair class will meet on Tuesday evenings for ten weeks beginning Sept. 22, from 5:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. The class will be held in the school's small engine technology lab. Class size is limited to 15. The cost of the class is $99, $89 for senior citizens age 60 and over.

Those attending the class will receive instruction on various types of small engine driven machinery. Participants may bring their own lawn mower, tractor, weed cutter, snow blower or other machinery to be serviced. No book required. Instructor is Charlie Galownia.

Flushing Garden Club meets

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the Flushing Garden Club will have their installation dinner and meeting at the Farm Restaurant near Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. Hostesses for the evening will be the officers. Gina Marinucci will read the devotions for the evening. Roll call will be to name the fertilizer that you usually use for your gardens. Barb Cencula will present The program titled "Down on the Farm" best natural fertilizer . The three minute Flower of the month titled "Joe-Pye Weed" will be read by Martha Debold. Gina Marinucci and Beth Rushton will be planting the pots of mums. The tour to Creekside Gardens has been canceled. Members who will be going should meet at the Flushing Methodist Church at 5 p.m. and then caravan to the restaurant.

National Pike Knife Club picnic

The National Pike Knife Club picnic will be held at the Mother's Club Shelter at Barnesville Memorial Park on Saturday, Sept. 12. Lunch will be served at noon.

Legion meeting changed

Due to the Labor Day holiday on the regular meeting date, the Belmont American Legion Post 312 is deferring the Sept. meeting date to Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at the post home on Barrister St.

All members are invited to attend as well as any veterans wishing to join.

3C's Cancer Support Group meets

The 3C's Cancer Support Group will meet at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 14 at Barnesville Senior Citizens Center. All members and public invited to attend.

Belmont County Retired Teachers Association meets

Belmont County Retired Teacher Association will meet Sept. 10, at the Belmont Hills Country Club. The meeting will begin at noon with guest speaker Belmont County Commissioner Ginny Favede. Members are requested to bring items for "Tools for Schools." Reservations must be made to Joan Russell by Sept. 5. Election of officers for 2010-2011 will be held.

Texas Hold'Em Tournament Oct. 17

A Texas Hold'Em Tournament will be sponsored by the Barnesville Football Moms Organization on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Barnesville American Legion Hall. Square dance Sept. 17

WesBanco Barnesville is again hosting a wonderful evening of old-fashioned fun at a Square Dance on Sept. 17 (Thursday night prior to Pumpkin Festival) from 7-10 p.m. Pickn' on Country will provide the music. Chuck Monticello will be the square dance caller.

The Senior Citizen Center across the street will be having a Chicken BBQ prior to the dance, from 4-7 p.m.

Approximately 400 people attended last year's square dance.

WIC walk-in clinics

The Belmont County WIC program will sponsor walk-in clinics on Tuesdays in St. Clairsville and on Wednesdays in Bellaire. The hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Barnesville hours are the second Friday of each month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ohio Hills Health Services, 110 E. Main St.

New clients need proof of address, proof of income and identification such as a drivers license or a social security card. Crib cards will be accepted for newborns. Clients who need recertified will need proof of income and their WIC folders. Also, a written authorization from a parent/guardian to have a child receive WIC services is needed if a parent/guardian is not with a child at the time of recertification. Belmont County WIC is having open enrollment the months of May and June. WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that encourages breastfeeding and provides education to its clients.
