On April 7-8, 2017 students from the Gifted and Talented class at Barnesville Middle School participated in an Ohio Legislature simulation at Salt Fork State Park Lodge. The students developed their leadership, communication and problem solving skills. This program covers several social studies and language arts standards for fifth through eighth grades. Each student contributed to the team by researching the Ohio Revised Code and deciding on a law they would like to change in Ohio. They had to write, debate and defend their bill in Council Session on Friday evening and in General Assembly on Saturday.

Each team also researched and developed a cultural display of an Ohio county. Our students chose Champaign, Franklin and Licking counties. Two representatives from each team participated in a citizenship and geography contest. During the Summit, there were ten Outstanding Representatives chosen from seventy-four participants. Jerney Fox was awarded an Outstanding Representative plaque for his participation, conduct, attitude, and excellent debate skills. Franklin County was awarded second place on their county board and Champaign County received an Outstanding Bill award.

At the Summit, students may become high school leaders and throughout high school, during the EOS simulation, conduct the entire process of EOS. Kinzie Kaplet was chosen to become a leadership officer for Eastern Ohio Summit. She will continue her officer responsibility all four years of high school.

The students had a great experience and learned a great deal about Ohio, how a bill becomes a law and met other children from this area with similar interests. The sixth graders and Mrs. Gallagher would like to thank the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veterans of Foreign Wars Men's Auxiliary, Barnesville Area Education Foundation, Rotary, Kiwanis, and BPO Elks, for their generosity and making this trip possible.
