For this addition of "New Teacher on the Block" we had the opportunity to interview Natasha Shilling, our outstanding, new school guidance counselor. The Barnesville native attended Ohio University, Zanesville, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in Middle Childhood Education and a master's degree in School Guidance Counseling.

In high school, Shilling participated in many extracurricular activities such as Student Council, Varsity B, FEA, Blood Bash Committee, Art Club, Pathways to Teaching, SADD, and HOBY. She was also a peer mentor and captain of the volleyball and softball teams. In college, she played softball, was a peer mentor, a math tutor and an assistant. Her senior year she was awarded an Ohio University student leadership award for academic excellence, community service, and leadership.

Shilling says her biggest accomplishment is overcoming difficult times in life and still working hard to reach the goals she set for herself. Appropriately, Shilling chose the word "hardworking" to describe herself. When asked what she liked about her current position as Barnesville High School's guidance counselor, she said, "I absolutely love helping students and helping them reach and set their goals. A highlight of this school year is witnessing the excitement students have when they find out they have been accepted into college." Shilling also stated that her parents are her biggest inspiration.

Shilling's hobbies include living life to the fullest. She enjoys going to church, spending time with my family, running, weight lifting, singing, drawing, hiking, fishing, and riding ATVs. Shilling is "blessed with a small, but extremely loving family." Her family includes parents Donna and Todd, younger brother Kody, niece Remmy, husband Deron and sons Bryar, 4, and Brogan,2.

Her mom works at the local Barnesville Hutton Memorial Library, while her father works at Oxford. Her younger brother Kody is a science teacher in Cambridge. Her college sweetheart and now husband, Deron, is a police officer in Barnesville. She is also very fortunate to have three grandparents, Fred and Nancy Skinner and Darlene House.

If Shilling could travel anywhere in the world, she would go to Australia to meet her running buddy, Maxwell. One of her favorite aspects of teaching was taking math concepts and making them into raps to help students better understand. Rapping in her math classes made many great memories. Shilling says, "Math is not an easy concept for many students, so the moment a student 'gets it' and their face lights up is such a rewarding moment."

We think we speak for everyone when we say we are very thankful to have Natasha Shilling as our new guidance counselor. We wish her the best of luck for many years.
