Union Local Middle School 'Turkey Trot 2009' collects food for Project Manna
Union Local Middle School recently held their 11th Annual Turkey Trot race and canned food drive on November 6th. Students collected and donated 1,400 cans of food to Project Manna, a local food pantry. Each student who donated at least two canned food items could walk, run, or watch the race. Mrs. Norman's 6th Grade advisory brought in the most cans at 220.
Teams were based on advisory classes again this year. Scoring was done similar to a Cross Country meet. Each advisory's first seven runners' placements were counted towards each team's score. (Note: of these seven runners, at least three needed to be girls). The top advisory team overall will wins a pizza party. Individual awards of T-shirts were given out for the top 5 boys and girls in each grade and turkeys, donated by Riesbeck's, for the top boy and girl in each grade.
The individual winners in the sixth grade race and winners of the turkeys were Kaleb McDiffit and Rebekah Whiteley. In the 7th grade race, Jared Causby and Bethanie Schaffer were the top turkeys. Finally, in the 8th grade race Jake Leishman and Cori Medley took top honors. This year Mrs. Norman's 6th grade advisory won the team scoring winning a pizza party.
We would like to give a special thanks to Riesbeck's, and our principal Mrs. Yanok for making this year's Turkey Trot a huge success!
