About 40 years ago, I started to work in the telecommunications field, not as an engineer, but out working the lines.
This sort of work does pay well, but it can be tough work. Imagine climbing a telephone in the middle of a snow storm in January, or digging a ditch in a heat wave in July.
Our local AT&T folks get the work done, many times ahead of the schedule. One Saturday night a young lady did not make the turn near my home, smashed into the pole and broke the pole. I called the AT&T repair center and filed a report. The Highway Patrolman took down the information from that report and I figured that it would be a couple of days before the pole would be replace. Events surprised me, the pole was replaced before 8 am on Sunday morning.
All of the problems that I have called in that required someone to come out, have been repaired before the schedule service call time.
People who have not traveled really can't appreciate how good the local crew is. Many places that I have lived, they may not be able to get to your service call for 5 or 6 days, some times longer.
So I say to our local AT&T service guys, thanks.
