Ohio Turnpike director: Pay policies must change

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- The new director of the Ohio Turnpike says its policies for payouts to employees are too generous.

The turnpike's top engineer retired last year with $287,000 in pay and separation payments, highlighting attractive benefits for employees of the toll road. The money paid to 30-year turnpike employee Dan Castrigano included an $111,000 separation payment.

The turnpike, which is under scrutiny by Gov. John Kasich's (KAY'-siks) administration, says the payments were owed under turnpike pay policies.

Executive Director Richard Hodges says those policies need to be changed.

According to The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/w3XwaW ), the chief engineer was among 29 workers who cashed out $20,000 or more in unused sick and vacation pay upon retiring last year. The turnpike paid out $1.43 million in separation pay last year.
